"JUST BREATHE"
|
Sometimes this is easier said than done. We do it on average 23,000 times a day, but are we getting the most out of our efforts? It has been my experience that the majority of our society does not use the muscles of respiration properly. Most of us tend to use the auxiliary muscles of respiration (chest and shoulders) to initiate a breath instead of the primary muscles, the diaphragm and abdominals. This is often referred to as using the muscles of "desperation" instead of the muscles of respiration. So who does it right? Watch an infant lying in its back. All you see is the belly rise and fall. You too were born this way and remembering the sensory motor skills will come easy with some practice.
Start by placing one hand on your belly (thumb over belly button) and the other on your chest. Let your abdomen relax. Now take a breath into your belly feeling it expand, the lower hand moving first and your top hand second or not at all. Visualize it as inhaling fills your belly up like a glass of water from the bottom up. I recommend doing this exercise at least twice a day for 10 to 20 repetitions. The best time to do it is after waking up in the morning and just before bed. It is also useful in centering yourself through the day.
Stress and tension will affect our breathing patterns. Even if you find that you are breathing properly this is a good exercise to do counteract the stressor of life. Making this a regular practice will enhance focus and concentration, promote deep relaxation and bring more oxygen into the body which facilitates healing.
