Does Chiropractic Care Help to reduce Blood Pressure

Fact about Blood Pressure

Blood pressure is a vital sign that is a measure of the pressure of flowing blood against the walls of blood vessels in accordance with heart beats. As the heart beats and pumps blood through the body, systolic and diastolic blood pressure can be measured.  Blood pressure can be high, low, or normal.  Blood pressure that is low or high for a long term will put one at a greater risk for developing many diseases such as stroke or heart disease.

The nervous system controls and coordinates all functions of the body and structural shifts in the spine can occur that obstruct the nerves and interfere with their function. These structural shifts can lead to obstruction of the nerves and it is this obstruction, called vertebral subluxations, that chiropractors correct.  By removing the structural shifts, chiropractic improves nerve supply and function. The chiropractic adjustment is the means in which the structural shifts are removed.  It is a safe, specific force applied to a joint.  Chronic problems tend to arise if the vertebral subluxation is left untreated. Chiropractic helps the body heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery.

Case History

The patient reported on in the study was a 52-year-old female with high blood pressure. She was a personal trainer active in yoga and spin classes.  Due to her blood pressure, her medical doctor prescribed medication to manage it but she declined the medical advice and sought chiropractic care instead.

The chiropractor examined her and found structural shifts in her neck and midback.  She had decreased range of motion, tenderness, and muscle spasms.  These structural shifts can lead to obstruction of the nerves and it is this obstruction, called vertebral subluxations, that chiropractors help the body correct.

Following chiropractic care, her blood pressure improved dramatically by 20 points on the second visit.  By her ninth visit, she was no longer hypertensive.

The study’s author called for additional research to investigate the clinical implications of chiropractic care of those with elevated blood pressure.
